$385.00

Original 1987 Happy? tour T-shirt by Public Image Ltd., worn and softened through extended use.

Category: Curated

File Under: #Punk, #MusicMerchandise, #1980sTourShirts, #BandEphemera

Description

Original tour T-shirt produced for Public Image Ltd.’s 1987 Happy? tour. The shirt was printed by Artists’ Merchandise and sold at live shows during the album’s release cycle.

Following the breakup of the Sex Pistols, John Lydon formed Public Image Ltd. as a separate project, moving away from punk’s stripped-down structure toward a sound shaped by dub, funk, and experimental rock. By the late 1980s, PiL functioned as a touring band with a distinct visual and musical identity, operating within—but not defined by—punk’s earlier framework.

The front of the shirt features a monochrome screen print of Lydon alongside the HAPPY? logo. The back lists tour cities, now partially worn into the fabric. The garment has been continuously worn over time, resulting in softened cotton, visible stretching, sun fading, and print loss consistent with long-term use.

The shirt was gifted by In Vintage We Trust (Toronto) around 2017 and has remained in active rotation rather than archival storage.

Within Clearance Archive, the piece is positioned as a working example of late-1980s tour merchandise—produced for use, circulated through shows, and altered by wear rather than preservation.
