Disposable paper gift bag featuring a kitten in a garden setting, remade by Chains with multiple layers of UV resin, reinforced structure, and paracord handles.
Category: Remade
File Under: #Kitsch, #DisposableCulture, #Gifting
Description
A commercially produced paper gift bag printed with a photographic image of a white kitten seated on a wooden swing in a garden setting. Originally intended for single-use gifting, the bag has been fully remade to function as a durable carrying object.
The original paper structure has been sealed and reinforced through the application of multiple layers of UV resin, curing the surface into a rigid, glossy shell. The process renders the object waterproof and materially stable, fixing creases, seams, and folds in place rather than concealing them.
New paracord handles have been installed, replacing the original paper cords. Attachment points remain visible and slightly irregular, reflecting the object’s transformation from disposable packaging into a functional accessory.
The image itself — sentimental, decorative, and unambiguous in tone — is preserved intact. Rather than reframing or subverting the motif, the intervention foregrounds it, allowing the excess of cuteness and domestic fantasy to coexist with the labor required to make the object permanent.
The underside of the bag is signed and dated by the artist.
